The plan to demolish and rebuild the Gabba ahead of 2032 came out properly this month, after months of speculation. Government reviewed four options, kept the existing stadium, refurbish it, build new elsewhere, and landed on demolish and rebuild as, apparently, the cheapest of the four.
Cheapest of four options and the number still tripled from the original estimate. That's the part generating the backlash, understandably.
I don't have strong feelings about stadium design. What I'm actually watching is Woolloongabba itself, the suburb around it. Olympic infrastructure spending tends to lift the immediate area regardless of which specific option gets built, new transit links, precinct redevelopment, years of construction activity. The stadium debate is politics. The suburb-level effect is closer to a numbers question, and it's the one I'm actually tracking.
